Boss Tuner
The Boss line of tuners has continued to amaze me with all of their changes and upgrades throughout the years. I think I got my first one back in 1996. Back then it was just a simple tick over a little speaker that you had to turn your amp down really low before you were able to hear it. This really made practicing guitar a real pain, especially when you were trying to practice those screaming rock lead licks over your Marshall amp. Now the Boss metronomes come with a headphone jack, and most practice amps nowadays come equipped with a auxiliary in so you can hear your metronome tick, built in beats, or built in rhythms at the same volume as your screaming guitar.
Just a few of the upgrades as of specifically the Boss TU-80 is one the built in tools for helping us shred guitar guys with seven awesome rhythms, and ten excellent beats which practicing with these beats and rhythms is a whole lot more exciting and bearable than just sitting there playing along to a tick sound.
The new Boss TU-80 is slim sexy and sleek, and small enough to fit in your pocket, yet durable enough to toss into your backpack, gig bag, or guitar case. The look is very hip with its slim design, and a very cool looking LCD display that’s a real attention getter especially in the dark.
With this low of a price for such an excellent practice tool, you almost need to have one just to play with as a new toy, and take the boring edge off of those hour long scale practice sessions that can be so grueling at times. One of the great parts about this new Boss tuner is that it is so rich in features that your chances of ever outgrowing it are slim.
The Boss tuner also offers perfect chromatic tuning at almost eight octaves, and support for seven string guitars, and the six string bass guitars. This Boss metronome and tuner will tune down also to five flats.
I believe about the only metronome solutions that could even come close to possibly beating the Boss tuner and metronome is one of the few software style computer based metronomes.
Granted there are a few advantages to the software style metronomes such as the ability to set the beats per minute to gradually increase over a given time frame, but the downside with the computer software style metronomes is that you can only use them when you have your computer with you With the Boss tuner being that it is powered by battery you can grab it, throw it in your pocket, and use it on the road, while camping, or like myself when practicing on a nice cool day at a local park.
Hopefully the Boss Corporation will add the ability to have the metronome gradually increase over a programmed time period like the software style metronomes that would certainly make the world a better place for us musicians.
The Boss tuner is a excellent tool, and one which I think should be carried around as part of your arsenal, but shop around, take a look at all the other tuner / metronome solutions, compare prices, and make a choice as to the one that best fits your needs. A portable tuner / metronome is a relatively small investment, but typically a tool you want to purchase, and get several years use out of it, so choose wisely.
